Beginning in the capital of Kunming, your first stop will be the fascinating Stone Forest. Home to over 80 hectares of karst limestone pillars dating back over 270 million years, this extraordinary rare geological phenomenon needs to be seen, to be believed. Travel to Dali and explore the ancient town, before proceeding to Erhai Lake and the Three Pagodas.

Journey to UNESCO listed town of Lijiang, and visit the Bai minority’s village and local market on route. Enjoy a day at the Black Dragon Pond, one of Lijiang’s most popular parks that’s surrounded by walkways, willows and stunning chestnut trees. Fly to the city of Chengdu, and learn about the conservation efforts to save the Giant Pandas from extinction, at the Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Centre

 
 

Day 1: New Zealand – airplane-takeoff – Kunming

Depart New Zealand on your overnight flight for Kunming.

Please note, due to the flight schedule some flights may depart and arrive on day 2 of the itinerary. 

Day 2: Kunming

On arrival in Kunming, you will be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel. Kunming is the capital and largest city of the Yunnan province in southwest China. It is also called the Spring city due to its weather.

Day 3: Kunming – Stone Forest (B, L)

After breakfast, you will head to visit the Stone Forest. An extremely rare geological phenomenon dating back 270 million years, the Stone Forest is 80 hectares of karst limestone pillars in fantastic shapes that resemble a forest viewed from a distance. The Stone Forest is also home to the Sani tribe, a branch of the diverse and scattered Yi minority renowned for their diligence, embroidery, and dancing. In the evening, you will have a chance to enjoy an optional special dinner for a feast on the delicious local food – across the bridge rice noodles. 

Day 4: Dali (B, L)

Travel to Dali this morning where you will meet your Dali guide. Proceed to Erhai Lake (named for its ear-like shape) followed by a look out of the Three Pagodas. Then explore the Dali Ancient Town with a history of 1,300 years, which is the home to the Bai minority. This Ancient Town is like a chess board with four gates guarding the four directions. It stands between the Cangshan Mountains and Erhai Lake, a natural configuration that seems specially designed for a good and bountiful life. Enjoy the rest of the day to relax in the hotel or explore the old town at your own pace. 

Day 5: Dali – Lijiang (B, L)

Enjoy an overland drive of approximately 2.5 hours to Lijiang. Enroute you will visit the Bai minority’s village and local market. Opt to join the optional activity at your own expense, enjoying a Horse-drawn cart ride in Xizhou to admire the Dali countryside and Erhai Lake views. 

Upon arrival in Lijiang, visit the Lijiang Ancient Town. A gathering place of the Naxi minority, Lijiang Ancient Town is a mountain town of stone and tile, laced with canals and lanes, which has been listed as a UNESCO world monument. 

Day 6: Lijiang (B, L)

Enjoy a day tour to the Black Dragon Pond with Dongba Culture Museum, Baisha Frescos and Shuhe Ancient Town. The Black Dragon Pond, surrounded by walkways, willows and chestnut trees, is the best known and most frequently visited park in Lijiang. The Five Phoenixes Pavilion built in the early 17th century has intricately joined and beautifully painted eaves. North of Lijiang County finds the Liulidian and Daobaoji Temple at Baisha village, housing 558 mural painting on 12 walls that date back to the Ming Dynasty in 1385. 

Optional Activity: Yunnan minorities “Rivers & Mountains” Dancing Show. 

Day 7: Lijiang – Chengdu (B)

Today you will be transferred to Chengdu by flight. Chengdu is a sub-provincial city which serves as the capital of Sichuan province. It is one of the three most popular cities in Western China. The surrounding Chengdu Plain is also known as the “Country of Heaven” and the “Land of Abundance”.

Day 8: Chengdu – Panda Breeding and Research Centre (B, L)

Drive to see the extraordinary Giant Pandas at the Panda Breeding and Research Centre. This huge institution replicates the natural habitat of the giant panda and is dedicated to preserving and increasing their population to ensure their survival. Wander and explore Jinli Old Street. Later, you can enjoy an optional special Sichuan cuisine – Hotpot.

Day 9: Chengdu – airplane-takeoff – New Zealand (B)

Today you will be transferred to the airport for your flight home.

Today you will be transferred from Chengdu to Yichang via a high-speed train. Upon arrival, you will board a Yangtze River cruise ship and begin your memorable 4-night Yangtze River cruise.

Day 10: Yangtze River – Three Gorges Dam (B, L, D)

Start the morning on-board the ship in the presence of the beautiful Three Gorges Dam. Spend your day out on an excursion or relax on-board the cruise ship. This evening you will return to the ship and attend the Captain’s Welcome Banquet. Enjoy the evening entertainment of a Chinese dancing ball.

Optional Activity: Three Gorges Dam Site

The Three Gorges Dam Site is one of the largest construction projects undertaken by mankind and is the biggest hydropower project in the world.

Day 11: Yangzte River – Lesser Three Gorges (B, L, D)

Today, you could embark on the exciting excursion or relax on-board the ship. The afternoon will see you continue to cruise into the western section of Xiling Gorge. 

Optional Activity: Lesser Three Gorges or Shennong Stream (subject to the cruise)

Explore the Lesser Three Gorges or Shennong Stream, a shining pearl hidden in remote mountains. You will leave your cruise ship and board smaller vessels to sail through the narrower and breathtaking Lesser Three Gorges region or Shennong Stream, lined by sheer cliffs and mountains.

Day 12: Yangtze River – Fengdu Ghost City (B, L, D)

Today you will pass through the mountains of Eastern Sichuan. Participate in an excursion or relax by pampering yourself with a massage, and make the most of the last full day on your ship. Tonight, enjoy a farewell dinner and pack your bags in preparation for disembarkation tomorrow. 

Optional Activity: Fengdu Ghost City or Shibaozhai (subject to the cruise)

Fengdu Ghost City is regarded as the “City of ghosts.” The temples built on Ming Mountain depict the punish instruments and demon paintings, demonstrating the Chinese people’s imagination of hell. 

Shibaozhai is a 12-story wooden pagoda built against the rock in the 18th century. It is in Zhong County on the south bank of the Yangtze River. There are steles and inscriptions of past dynasties on each floor. Visitors may also appreciate the spectacular Yangtze River from the windows of each floor during climbing.

Day 13: Chongqing – airplane-takeoff – New Zealand (B) 

Today you will be transferred to the airport for your flight home.
